Painting Tips
Nothing transforms a space faster than a coat of paint

Mag Ruffman, star of Anything I Can Do (on Prime) and author of How Hard Can it Be? Tool Girl's Favourite Repais and Projects (McClelland & Stewart, 2003), offers some expert painting advice:

  • If you burn a lot of candles, you'll have soot build up on walls. New paint won't adhere well unless you scrub the walls first with a solution of detergent, water and ammonia, then rinse with clean water.
  • For smooth walls, choose rollers with a 3/8" (10mm) nap. For textured walls or ceilings, choose rollers with a 1/2" (15mm) nap.
  • If you take a break, cover your paint can or roller tray with a damp cloth so the paint doesn't skin over.
  • Stains and water damage should be covered with a stain-blocking primer before you put on fresh colour. Otherwise, the stains may bleed through the new paint.
  • Mildew has to be killed or it will leach through fresh paint. Was the walls with a solution of bleach and water. Let stand 20 minutes, then rinse with clear water.
  • Slide the roller cover off the holder slightly so the roller edge can get closer to corners.
  • Think long-term when buying tools for DIY projects. You'll get more bang for your buck and reduce waste.

  • Got any tips of your own?

    Tip:
Don't screw around with all the conventional painting stuff, use a paint bomb instead. First remove all furniture and solidly mask anything you don't want painted. Then open the windows, or remove them if they come out for cleaning.

Place a 5' tall ladder in the center of the room, with a five gallon plastic bucket of paint on top of the ladder. Insert one block of C4 or RDX in the middle of the bucket with a remote detonator or timed fuse. BOOM!

Whole room is painted in two seconds flat. Do make sure to remove the room before painting it, unless you want your silouhette on one wall and a ringing tone in your ears. (Don't ask me how I know that about the silhouette.)

No brushes or rollers to clean up, no aching back, really earth friendly with nothing to pour down the drain and no cleanup solvents required!
