I just purchased a computer with Windows 7, 64 bit  that contains a shortcut for IE8 as well as another shortcut for IE8 64bit.  They appear to be different applications which is confirmed by the "about" information.

What difference in performance can I expect from the 64 bit version, and how do I make one or the other the default application to launch when I select a "Favorite".

At present, my "Favorites" which I imported from my previous XP computer launch the 32 bit application version.

As always, thanks for the help.

Hi stevetsow,

They are virtually the same.  But there are difference's because of the operating system (32-bit and 64-bit#.  These differences can have an effect on the Internet Explorer 32-bit and 64-bit.

See the following web site for information:  This would generally also apply to Windows 7.  There are some programs that do not function well or at all in a 64-bit OS and Internet Explorer.  Having both or the accessibility to use both can clear this up.

Differences between the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Internet Explorer that are included in the x64-based versions of Windows Server 2003 and in Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

Thanks Scott!  It's Steve, formerly 76704,643. I lost access when they terminated Classic accounts so I now need a web based account to access the Forum.

Hi Steve,

OK.  I use a cable connection, and I have a CompuServe 2000 account.  The Classic account stopped so I had switched over to the CS2K account and have been using it ever since.

I will be building a new computer next month.  It will have WinXP as this one does and will have Windows 7.  The computer I build will not be the best that it could be but it will be better than what I have not, a lot better.  What I really want is one with an i7 processor maybe 965 or 975, but this costs a lot and will have to wait.
I will be installing Windows 7 32-bit and will also try installing Windows 7 64-bit.  I want to see what I can run in the 64-bit version of Windows 7.

I hope the information I gave you about the Internet Explorer has helped.  Let me know, and if there is anything else about this that you might need.

Hi Steve,

One thing is worth mentionning (again): Flash will only work on the 32-bit version.

Thank you Hans!  I was puzzled by the curious behaviour of the 64 bit version and its constant request with regard to Flash.

From my experience with 64 bit machines, 64 b is slower though it is supposed to be faster, and it can be difficult to find some drivers. I think that the slow down occurs  because 64 b takes more drive free space.

However, new computers, such as yours and mine as well, have the drivers ready for downloading at the appropriate manufacturer or vendor sites. You may want to collect all the drivers ahead. I used the Windows compatibility Center information as a guidance.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx

I asked the software and hardware manufacturer support sites for the last updates, it is easier and faster to obtain the drivers this way.

I have also heard that the Update advisor misses reporting on some needed updates. So, go over the report and compare it with your computer's hardware/software list.

Thanks for the comments, Carmen!  So far my disappointments with the 64 bit machine have been the selective availability of drivers from Logitech, and the tardiness of HP in providing drivers for printers and perhaps other peripherals.  Although HP lists the driver on the respective web page pertaining to the specific peripheral, when attempting to download the driver a message appears stating the engineers are working on it and it should might be available mid November.

Furthermore I miss the PCMCIA slot, which was replaced by an Express Slot, making my vital PCMCIA sound card un useable.  Adapters for PCMCIA to Express are unfavorably rated because of their limited success in reliability.

Some software that needs to run in 32 bit mode does not run correctly (Nero is one of the first I noticed) so a 64 bit machine has some setbacks.

Hopefully with time some or many of these issues will be addressed.

And while I have drifted entirely from the original intent of this thread, I would like to ask how I can login to the Forum, now having to use a web based Compuserve User ID, and remain logged in (IOW using login cookies).  That feature (Remember ME etc) does not appear to be an available option on the Compuserve web based login page.

As you may have surmised I sysoped for over a decade on Compuserve Forums up to and including the initial Prospero years.

Regards,

Yes, Mike, I remember your name. Are you assigned to a forum?

I was also having problems with login to CompuServe only a few days back. Jerry may be able to help.

This is what I did to get out of the stale state (some of the steps may not be needed):

I first searched for and deleted CompuServe cookies. Entered "cookies" and deleted "compuserve" cookies. Just the ones named "compuserve".

I then, opened this forum's page so that I could see if I was logged in, but the My Stuff, etc did not show. I closed the page. From here, I tried to login to [Webmail.compuserve.com] and had to reset the password. After a few tries, the password was reset with the same identification I had when it worked and was able to login.

I did convert the numeric id before the deadline for doing so. I did not wanted to use it because it did not import my privileges or My Stuff.

When you get to the forum you want to start CIS from, save the link to your desktop.

From there you should be able to reset your password. Or go to a private forum if you have one and try to login from there. You will have to reset the login again.

Once your login is accepted, you should be able to get into a forum.

Thanks Carmen...my name is actually Steve.  I worked on the RV Forum until it was decided to move it to its own venue where there would be no advertising.  At that time most of our members were logging in using dialup often on shared phone lines as they travelled in their RV's.  The web based interface offered by AOL which included a high overhead of advertising was not compatible with our membership's ability to log in.

Hi, Steve!

"Stevetsow" is an AOL/AIM screenname. You can change your password at http://myaccount.aol.com . You also have a webmail account available at http://webmail.aol.com

----

You might try creating an Internet Explorer bookmark for your CompuServe "My Stuff" page. (Sign in to this forum, click on "My Stuff" at the top of the page, and then create an Internet Explorer bookmark for your "My Stuff" page.)

Then try accessing the CompuServe forums through your "My Stuff" bookmark. Internet Explorer may offer to store your forum screenname and password for future use.

Don,

Thanks for the info.  However i know from past experience whether login cookies are deposited depends on the route of entry to the system.   The complications arise through the various transformations CS Forums have undergone and the number of entry routes that have existed and may have been added.

To  my knowledge, login cookies will  or should not be deposited without the user being presented the option...usually with a check mark and a dialogue stating "Remember Me"

We have to bear in mind this is still AOL, and while I will refrain from AOL bashing, it would not be beyond AOL's usual practice to deposit cookies without the approval of the user.  (I am referring to cookies other than for simple identification) but that discussion is inappropriate for this thread IAC.

Bottom line, using the route of entry I currently use, there is no way to remain logged in continuously.

As I previously alluded to, I had over a decade of experience with behind the scenes with CS Forums and currently administer a number of independent forums using a variety of software platforms.

Don, I do not see means of creating an "Internet Explorer bookmark" from My" Stuff page."

Also, I created my screen name when they first became available, but Netspace or AOL will not accept my credentials. I log from Compuserve login screen.

Hi, Carmen!

To create an IE bookmark for the forum login screen, click on "My Stuff" at the top of the forum page, or click on the following link:

http://community.compuserve.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?webtag=ws-iesupport&nav=MyForums

Then, on the IE top toolbar, choose "Favorites > Add to Favorites".

Then try accessing the CompuServe forums through this "My Stuff" bookmark. Internet Explorer may offer to store your forum screenname and password for future use.
