RJC: 21% of Democrats did not support pro-Israel House resolution on Goldstone report

Wednesday, November 04, 2009     By: RJC Press Office

Washington, D.C. (November 4, 2009) -- Yesterday, 33 Democrats voted “no” and 20 Democrats voted “present” on House Resolution 867, which condemned the “Goldstone report” on Israel’s conduct in Gaza last winter. The final roll call vote on the House floor was 344 for, 36 against, and 22 present.

H. Res. 867, introduced by Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, calls on the Obama administration to oppose efforts by the Arab states in the UN General Assembly and other international forums to use the Goldstone report as a propaganda tool and a diplomatic weapon to attack Israel. In all, 21 percent of the Democratic caucus did not support this pro-Israel measure.

Republican Jewish Coalition Executive Director Matt Brooks said:

The Goldstone report was an egregious example of the United Nations Human Rights Council at work. At the instigation of the UN’s powerful Organization of the Islamic Conference, UNHRC commissioned a report on Israel’s Operation Cast Lead in Gaza last winter that was intended to portray Israel as the aggressor, as intentionally causing Palestinian civilian casualties, and as a violator of human rights. The resulting report was biased and inaccurate.

We are very concerned that 21 percent of the Democrats in the U.S. House (53 of 256) refused to support H.Res. 867, including many top Democratic leaders and important and influential House committee and subcommittee chairmen.

Democrats continue to campaign in the Jewish community as unwavering friends of Israel, but when it comes to acting on those promises, leading Democrats fall short.

[On the other hand -- and on the other side of the aisle -- only 5 Republicans voted either "nay" or present on the resolution of support for Israel.]

Anti-Israel animosity comes from one party only

Lawrence W. White
Last December, after 7000 rockets were fired from Gaza against Israeli civilians, Israel finally took military action to stop the bombardment. Following a 23 day war, the UN Human Rights Commission, composed of such stellar advocates of human rights as Sudan, Cuba, China, and Saudi Arabia, sent a "Fact-Finding Mission" headed by Richard Goldstone into Gaza.  They conducted uncritical interviews with officials of Gaza's Hamas government and militia claiming to be civilians. Their version of events was accepted without corroboration.

The commission then issued a 575-page report accusing Israel of applying disproportionate force, targeting civilians, destroying civilian infrastructure and using human shields in its offensive.   The report recommends that the U.N. Security Council require Israel to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the alleged crimes. Failing this, they recommend that the U.N. Security Council refer the report to the International Criminal Court, a war crimes tribunal.

Tuesday, the House of Representatives of the US Congress condemned the U.N. report as "irredeemably biased and unworthy of further consideration or legitimacy."   House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer called the report "unfair, unbalanced and inaccurate" in its portrayal of Israel's response to attacks from Hamas. On a 344-36 vote, the House passed a resolution urging President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton "to oppose unequivocally any endorsement" of the report. Twenty-two representatives voted "present."

The good news is that 344 Representatives or 80% of the House, supported the measure. While it is gratifying that Congress condemned the report by such a large margin, of note is the fact that those who refused to condemn the report, either by voting against it or voting present, overwhelmingly came from one side of the aisle. Of the 36 who voted against it, 33 were Democrats. Of the 22 who voted "present" 20 were Democrats. This means that 91% of those who refused to support the House resolution were Democrats.

This lesson should not be lost on Jewish voters. Nor will it be lost on all voters who are concerned about the morality of failing to condemn those terrorists who would wage war against civilians.

Those who voted against it need to be opposed on everything and anything they do because they are anti-semites who refuse to support Israel against a supposedly non-Muslim President who gives every indication he is the worst kind Fakir.

Folks:  70%+ of American Jews voted for the Democrat Party.  They did so with full knowledge of what the foreign policy consequences would be especially when applied to Israel.  I only hope that Netanyahu has the support of Israelis and the strength to withstand the coming onslaught.

Let's put it another way. Time is not on Israel's side. The longer Netanyahu waits, the less Israel will be able to do and rhew more he depends on the Muslim US President, the less likely Israel will be able to survive without Devine intervention.

Despite some fairly convincing evidence that has been assembled and published on the Web lately, I still don't think it is fair at this point to say that Obama is a Muslim. It is abundantly clear, however, that he is quite pro-Muslim, very familiar with Muslim belief and ritual, and pronounces Muslim religious phrases in Arabic flawlessly.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks like duck it is certainly not a chicken. And I submit that the same applies to the Muslim President.
