Another godawful misuse of technology in the ongoingly frantic efforts to replace humans. A pox on them, I say.

Neither.

It would be French or English depending on one's point of view.

It's my understanding that some 200 years ago, a disease common among seamen was called the English pox by French sailors while the same ailment was known as the French pox by the Brits.

So, is that where the expression "A pox on both their houses" came from? <g>

You are thinking of syphilis. It was sometimes called the spanish or french pox by the english. There are also expressions for leaving abruptly, without warning: french leave in english, partir à l'anglaise in french. One of the multitude of words for the menstruation in french is "l'arrivée des anglais", this because the english soldiers wore red coats. Another french expression is 'la maladie anglaise', homosexuality.

I did know the meaning of 'pox' and only knew the English part of an 'abrupt departure' or desertion.  It is no surprise that the French put their own twist on it.

The others are new to me, thank you for the education.

English: "French letter"

French: "capote anglaise"

English: "French letter"

French: "capote anglaise"

But those expressions refer to an object (condom), not the disease (syphillis).
