I am sorry to report that Susi Schneider died in Austria this afternoon. As many of you knew, she was suffering from cancer.

Her son Martin reports that she had heard the news that the Yankees won the World Series and that Hideki Matsui--one of her favorites--was the MVP.

This has been a very difficult time for Martin, who has had to close down and sell the family home. Susi, according to what I heard, faced her fate stoically and went very peacefully.

Those of you who remember her will also remember how much she loved the good old days in this forum, and how much she loved all of you and the contacts she made here. We will all remember her incredible spirit, her wonderful sense of humor, and how much she brought to our discussions and our gatherings.

It's been a really sad day all around. I will miss Susi. I got an email from Sylvia. If you guys plan a special get together at some point...let me know. I may not be able to do anything about it, but I would love to be with you and raise a glass to our friend. I loved her very much.

I am very sorry to learn of Susi's passing. She was one of the "special" individuals here, an enthusiastic opera fan and an avid journalist for her paper, Der Standard. I just checked the website of that newspaper (here), and there is nothing posted just now about her death. I'll check in the morning. I very much enjoyed being in her company in Vienna when members of this Forum visited that city in the summer of 1995.

That's very sad news. I didn't know that she had been ill, but that would explain why she hadn't been here for quite a while. I always looked forward to reading her posts.

Very sad news. Every time I attend an opera at the Met I miss seeing her in what I believe we called Susi's place, standing on the balcony in the very cold outside and chatting with her and others. She loved her operas, sometimes going 2 or 3 times during a run for her favorites. And she was very opinionated at times, always intelligent and filled with wry humor. Before I visited Vienna in 2007, she was one of those who put up with my insecurity and far too many questions and gave me good advice about what to do and see. In Vienna I made certain to read her column in Der Standard. On one Sunday morning, I was sitting in the Burgkapelle, waiting to hear the Vienna Boys Choir. Next to me was a friendly citizen of Vienna with a number of guests. I chatted with this stranger for awhile and when I was about done, mentioned to her with pride that I was friendly in the United States with Susi Schneider who wrote for Der Standard. And she replied with recognition. That is one my memories of Vienna. And I also recall phoning Susi from Vienna thanking her for the advice she had given me and how much fun I was having. She was surprised and pleased that I had phoned. I am happy I did that since that was the last time I spoke with her. She was a bright light in these sometimes dim times.--Alan

Susi was a good friend to us in Music Forum, and I thought of her as one of my very best friends. What fun she always was. So it's a shock to learn that she is gone and we won't be seeing her any more. I feel very sad for Martin and for her many friends.

Way back in 1995, she instigated some Music Forumites to make a trip to Vienna, including me, Ed Cowan, and John Graves. We met her at the Cafe Griensteidl, then Der Standard's watering hole, and she also organized a trip out to Döbling (a northern suburb) for lunch at a heuriger called Hengl Haselbrunner. Also at the table was one of her colleagues at Der Standard, and a week later there appeared an article about us under the title, "Sie diskutieren weltweit per PC über Musik - eine Gruppe kam auf Wienbesuch" - "They discuss music worldwide via PC -- one group came to visit Vienna." A couple of us were even mentioned by name. Such is fame.

After being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2007, Susi returned to Austria, where the health care benefits and perhaps also the health care system are better than ours - no surprise to anyone here nowadays, I expect. For a while it appeared that chemotherapy and surgery might have gotten the better of the cancer, but obviously it didn't last. Susi was a heavy smoker, though many of her friends tried for years to get her to quit; well, there you are. Rest in peace.

thanks for letting us know, seth. i didn't know she was ill, though like others here i missed her presence online. she was partly responsible for my being on the forum; when i first got interested in opera i found the forum with the idea of just coming here that once, to ask about inexpensive opera in ny b/c i didn't think i could afford the met or nyc operas. susie posted back with info about the cheap seats at the met, and was just very encouraging. her kindness made me feel like even knowing little about opera i could still become part of this forum. even when she wasn't at the met, those of us who were there would still meet in 'susie's place' on the balcony. i imagine we'll all keep calling it that......

i realize that you asked us to reply to your personal email, but i think along with talking to you about it we all sort of need to be communicating with the others here. she was such a part of the energy of the place, even when she wasnt posting......
