Susi Schneider projects Barack Obama has won the elections. I beg your pardon, he is now President-Elect Barack Obama".

Susi Schneider, Der Standard's U.S. correspondent since 1991, died on Thursday of cancer after a long illness.

The journalist, who lived in the U.S.A. for more than 40 years, also understood how to get around in the new media. Since the beginning of May 2007 she blogged for derStandard.at. Her USA-Blog had a constantly growing following - 2,863,083 accesses in all. Among her 250 entries she repeatedly scattered lessons in "American [English] for Advanced Students." An example: "'Restive' is a deceptive word: you might think it means 'peaceful,' but the opposite is the case. It means 'restless, unsettled.'" Susi Schneider too was restless, describing herself as a "political junky." Despite her illness she did not cease to comment on the U.S. election night for Der Standard. To spare herself, she wanted to be online "only briefly," but sent in her commentary all night long. At 2:45 AM, while CNN and other US media hesitated to declare the winner because of the 2000 debacle (Bush v. Gore), she wrote in large type: "OBAMA WINS ELECTION. Susi Schneider projects Barack Obama has won the elections. I beg your pardon, he is now President-Elect Barack Obama." As so often, she was right with her estimate. Her last blog entry came on October 12.

derStandard.at will miss Susi Schneider, colleague and human being. Our sympathy goes to her family.

Zunächst arbeitete Schneider für Österreichs Konsulat in New York.

(Christoph Prantner, DER STANDARD; Printausgabe, 7./8.11.2009)

Extraordinary life between Austria and the U.S.A. - Standard correspondent and derStandard.at blogger died on Thursday.

Vienna - Whoever visited her in Croton-on-Hudson had to go by an unusual route. The train to the small town, a few miles north of New York, went through Sing-Sing, the most notorious of American prisons. "So, now you've been in the clink," she'd greet her amazed guest with a broad smile. Unconventional, and always ready with a sharp joke, that was Susi Schneider.

The Viennese lived in the U.S.A. for more than 40 years, and worked for nearly 20 of them as a journalist - first for the Allgemeine Zeitung, then as correspondent for Der Standard. She was a "political junky" and said so herself. And whatever anyone wanted to know about the U.S. (and also about opera - Verdi! - and English literature), she could answer fully. She found her journalistic calling late. Previously, Schneider had worked for the Austrian Consulate in New York. When a speaker praised Presidents Reagan and Waldheim at a 1987 event in Alpbach, she walked out of the banquet, she was unable to find work in government posts. She then traveled through the U.S. with the exhibition "Jewish Vienna" and showed Americans another Austria, as she communicated a different America to Austrians.

On Thursday, Susi Schneider died in Salzburg after a long illness with cancer. (Christoph Prantner, Der Standard; print edition, 7/8.11.2009)

Thanks so much for posting these items from Der Standard, John! Susi was certainly one of "ours," but she had fans in other realms than music. I shall recall with pleasure the couple of weeks in Vienna during which we enjoyed her company. And she was in this Forum for a very long time. I shall miss her, and I'm sure those here who knew her from her postings will miss her as well. I'm glad, too, that "her" newspaper honored her with these items posted here.

John, ironically Sue and myself were right around there last Sunday--the Steinhart private garden in Croton was opened for the day and his Japanese Maple collection was in beautiful fall foliage--we thought about Susi as we drove there.  Thanks for posting the paper's wonderful tribute to her in the forum.  Regards, Len

It was with great enthusiasm that I logged in on Sunday to paste a post and to make fun of Lenny.  Well, I came to a sudden halt when I read the notice of Suzie's passing.  I felt incredibly sad, and that is as far as I got.  Having met her and formed and opinion about how wonderful a person she was I found myself at a loss for words when I tried to respond.

This is my response: to honor her with dignity and a piece of music that she would appreciate.  That is all I can do.  My mouth is full of ashes.
