Today's lenquiz work really surprised me--in it the lenquiz composer was concerned about antisemitism--the work had to wait a full 7 years to be performed publicly.  The lenquiz composer speaks about both jolly and sad elements that inspired the lenquiz work.  So with the above and the following two CLUECLIPs name the composer and the work.  Regards, Len

That's it. But the orchestration is not by Shostakovich, I think; he composed it for three soloists and piano.

John, I'm confused --I found this but don't quite understand what Shostakovich did or didn't do?

"From Jewish Folk Poetry (opus 79) is a song cycle for soprano, mezzo soprano, tenor and piano by Dmitri Shostakovich. It uses texts taken from archives of Jewish folk music compiled and translated by Moshe Beregovsky and Y. M. Sokolov.

The piece was composed in the autumn of 1948, after Shostakovich's denunciation in the Zhdanov decree of that year. The composer's situation and the official anti-Semitism of the time made a public premiere impossible until January 15, 1955, when it was performed by Shostakovich himself with Nina L'vovna Dorliak, Zara Dolukhanova and Alec Maslennikov. Before the premiere the work received a number of private performances."

If it helps my clips are from

Maria Chagoutch, mezzo soprano
Anastasia Soupovskaya, mezzo soprano
Evgueny Akhimov, tenor

Saint Peterburg Philharmobic Orchestra
Conductor Yuri Simonov
Paris, Théâtre des Champs Elysées, october 1997

Regards, Len

Well, there you are. The program note correctly describes the piece as composed for three singers and piano. Your clips, however, are with orchestra instead of piano. I've not seen it said that Shostakovich himself orchestrated the piece. Gergiev conducted the Kirov Orchestra here in a performance some years back, and I don't believe that program note identified the arranger, but I can't dig up the program to be sure. The Times review says nothing about it.

Shostakovich orchestrated his From Jewish Folk Poetry songs in 1948, but that version wasn't heard publicly until 1964. See footnote #4 on this page (207) in David Fanning's Shostakovich Studies for some clarification on this.
