I'm travelling to the UK for work at the end of next week and I'm looking for a bag that looks reasonably professional and will hold my 7D with a 17-55 f2.8 lens and a 55-250 lens, with room for a small laptop, laptop power cord, mouse, note pad and a few more bits of work stuff.

Any recommendations?

Check out Tom Binh's stuff -- it's beautiful, practical and expensive .... I have a Brain Cell for my laptop which I got because it has a solid (rigid plastic (?) panel on each side to protect it from pressure on the screen.

He makes some for computers I know that meet what TSA says you do not have to take you stuff out of to go through the X-Ray. Mine technically does not meet that because it has a couple of press studs on it but they have not objected before. No metal zip seems to be one of the main requirements.

Even if something like this Checkpoint Flyer is not what you want (or to spend) they are well worth knowing about!

I took a look, and don't see one that looks like it will carry camera gear too. I'm also running out of time - I leave next Friday.

Jeff,

Are you looking for a backpack or a shoulder bag?  I don't remember reading of any shoulder bag that will accommodate a laptop (then again how small a laptop are you talking about?).  If it's a backpack, there are a number available from the usual big names - check their web sites for bags that meet airline size limits (which may be smaller for an international flight, I don't know).

I've found the bag - the ThinkTank Urban Disguise 60 shoulder/messenger bag. Expensive, but it has an outside pocket (zipped) for a laptop and power supply (up to 17"), an inside slot for papers/folders, lots of room for camera gear (I can fit the 7D with 70-200 f2.8 attached, in one of three slots), and lots of additional easy-access pockets. I bought the back-pack harness add-on so I can even carry it as a backpack. It was expensive, but it is very well made and should be perfect. I almost bought the 50, but went for the extra room in the 60.

Jeff -

I'm glad you've found a bag that will serve your purposes.  Do report back after your trip to tell us how well (or not) it worked out.

Jeff,

It seems that bag is made for you!

I hope you get it in time and that it functions as well as you expect.

Have a good trip.

>I hope you get it in time<

I had it before the post - I bought it from a local store (Penn Camera), where I had checked it out. It was $10 more than at Amazon, but that was fine.

It does look like it will work very well, and with the optional backpack straps, I can put it on my back to get it out of the way while I'm carrying my checked luggage and then put the backpack straps in the bags being checked before for the flight.

The MUCH cheaper Tenba Laptop Messenger Bag (the large version) might have worked, but I couldn't find one to look at.

I tried my new Think Tank Urban Disguise 60 out today, loaded up with the 7D, 70-200 f2.8L IS, 17-55, 10-22, a small laptop with power supply and mouse, a couple of 8.5"x11" manuals, my MP3 player, and a Kindle. Everything fit easily, with the bag holding together well and lots of pockets for additional stuff. It weighed 20 lbs, and was a little uncomfortable on my shoulder after about a 1/4 mile walk. I then put on the backpack straps, and it was very comfortable for the walk back - the straps worked much better than I expected, without the lack of a sternum or waist strap being an issue.

When I go on my trip in two days, I'll leave the 70-200 behind, taking a MUCH lighter/smaller 55-250 instead, so I think this will work fine.

Jeff -

I'm glad your bag choice is working out for you!

Have you tried the 55-250mm with the 7D yet?  Are you getting good results with it?  So far, I'm very pleased with results from my 70-200mm f4L IS and the EF-S 17-55 mm.  I haven't yet tried out my 100mm macro.

I haven't used the 55-250 on the 7D yet except to check the focus for micro focus adjustment - it didn't appear to need any.

I've used a small backpack as a carryon when traveling and it's very comfortable and convenient having both hands free.

Of course there are some countries where you might want to have it on your chest rather than on your back where you can't see the guy with a sharp knife .....

While I agree with you, that doesn't apply here. I'm traveling for work and going to visit a customer to train them, so I need to take a laptop, a bunch of papers/documents (8.5x11) and a few other things for work. As I'll have some free time, and plan to meet up with a relative in the evening (one I haven't seen in many years, who has a new child), I want to carry my 7D and a couple of lenses too - finding a bag that would take these different things and look professional was a challenge, but the Think Tank should work well.

You are welcome to disagree with me but what are you disagreeing with?

I just said that backpacks were great for traveling and made a comment on the danger (real -- I've seen it being done in Spain) of having valuables in a backpack where you can't see it if someone slits it open and robs you. I didn't say this was likely to happen to you so you shouldn't take a back pack.

Failure to communicate.

I was agreeing with you, but stating that the bag I might normally use when traveling wouldn't work for this trip. Actually, I'll have a small backpack with me too, one that I can use for the stuff I might want on the plane so that the bigger bag can stay in the overhead.

<<" Are you getting good results with it?  So far, I'm very pleased with results from my 70-200mm f4L IS">>

 Libby -
I'm starting to look more seriously at tele-zooms for Canon EF mount.  I can use one on my film Canon Elan 7, while I save my pennies for a full frame Canon of some sort.
Seems to me that, if the IS works, and your camera will get you good results somewhere north of 800 ISO, this lens is an obvious choice over the  f2.8.  Not so much for price - if you're going to do it, might as well do it right - but because of weight.
The extra stop  (and other benefits) of the f2.8 IS L 70-200 come with essentially double the weight - a 3 pound lens...  That would be a bit awkward for backpacking, I think. <G>
 Did you consider the f2.8?
 Fred

Jeff, that's probably a wise decision.

I have both the Nikon 18-200 and 70-200.  Sometimes, as when I was shooting an outdoor dog event two weeks ago, I'll take both with me.  But I don't travel with the 70-200 unless I really think I'll need it (due to the weight and size), and when I'm taking a "full kit" on an airplane, it's almost always as a backpack rather than a shoulder bag.

Bactrian (the one from Asia), not Dromedary (the one from Africa and Australia these days).
