I am having one heck of a time trying to post in the Forum(s).

At times, every once in a while, what I type in this editor, after I click Post, it actually makes it to the thread.
Like this message, I do not know if it will make it until I click Post.

I know I will have a problem, when I try to use an apostrophe. IF I use one and the apostrophe does not appear, at the bottom of my window within this editor a little window in the bar(?) shows up with the word "Find:" and a space next to it with the cursor blinking. If you notice I have not used an apostrophe for fear of this message not getting out.

I did use quotation marks, so far so good.

As it stands, I have tried these past two weeks to post to "New messages to you" and when I click Post, the little bar at the bottom reads: waiting,compuserv.com - or something like that. As I typed that last sentence after using the last quotation mark, I tried to back arrow through the words to fix a misspell, but I could not back up the cursor in the usual manner. I had to click next to the letter I wanted to edit.
Now I have a feeling, this message will not post.

I am using Firefox - updated.
My Hardrive is 85% empty.
I do not have any worms, adware, malware, registry, viruses, nor is my computer bogging down for any reason.

Can anyone help?

Noel,

I, too, have had FireFox bring up it's search bar when I have used an apostrophe. It doesn't seem to do it in this editor window for me, though. Anyway, when that bar pops up, grab the mouse and click the red 'X' at the right end of that bar and you should be able to continue typing, apostrophe and all.

And I'm Still Using FireFox 1.5.something

You can't post to New Messages To You. That is a link that takes you to new messages to your attention.

Noel:

Are you bumping your mouse?

In Firefox, in general use, if you type an apostrophe on a page you're reading, you'll start the Quick Find (links only) feature. That's a way for you to avoid using your mouse; you can type 'google or whatever the link's text shows, and you're taken right to that link. Press Enter to "click" on the link. (You can similarly use the "/" forward slash to Quick Find any text on the page, and then use Ctrl+G to find it again.)

I use Firefox all the time here in the forums, and I just know I need to click in the message-composition window when creating a new post, and as long as I don't tab or click out of the window, I can type any character on the keyboard into the composition pane.

So to return to the original question: Are you bumping your mouse and accidentally going outside the message-composition pane? If you do that, then your characters will turn into commands instead. And that would explain why you sometimes can't use your cursor to go back to previous letters.

If you're quite certain you're not tapping your mouse to leave the message-composition window, you should look at your Firefox add-ons. Start Firefox in Safe Mode and see if you get the same problem.

Am I bumping my mouse?  When I click "Comment" in the post I want to reply, the editor opens up and I immediately copy and paste my interlocutors comment into the pane. But for sake of conversation, even when I do not paste the comment into the pane, and go straight to making a comment, I am not able to use character commands. The "Click to find" opens up at the bottom.
Right now, I am unable to use the "backspace" on my keyboard to go back to the previous sentence at the last period (.). What is interesting is I am able to use the parenthesis and the quotation marks on the keyboard but not the forward slashes, or apostrophe.

Sometimes, when I click "New messages to you", the bottom bar reads, "Waiting, compuserv.community." and I wait and wait and wait, and after a few minutes, X out the browser to start over.

I have also noticed, at one time or another, I can have all these command problems and the message will send. But, a second message will go into limbo.

This is the third time Ive tried to sent this message to you, lets see if it does this time. I am at wits end.

Hi Noel

I see that Tim is helping you with the Firefox questions, and I don't want to butt in on that. I just wanted to add that sometimes we have issues with different browsers and we never do really figure out what the heck is going on.

For example, I use IE 7, and lately, when I try to edit a message, it opens up just fine, but the message isn't there. The window remains blank (so of course I can't edit it lol). It doens't happen all the time, but enough to be annoying. So I open up Firefox, and it works just fine. I've had other issues in the past and if I switch browsers, it works fine. That makes me think that (for what reason I don't know) we just have odd issues on occasion. Maybe it's the forum software, maybe it's the browser, maybe it's the person's computer, maybe it's a combination, I dunno. And then all of a sudden, the problem just goes away (go figure)

If you have another browser on your computer, just for the heck of it, you could try using that and see if you still have the same problem?

Sometimes, when I click "New messages to you", the bottom bar reads, "Waiting, compuserv.community." and I wait and wait and wait, and after a few minutes, X out the browser to start over. >>>

Almost forgot, this one I can explain. Sometimes (again, the reason I don't know and it's probably a variety of reasons), the page just doesn't completely load. And if it doesn't, it won't allow you to type in your reply box. But you're doing the right thing, just close out, and start over. Once in awhile, if you hit the X (not the very top right hand corner, but the X that is there on the address bar of the browser), to stop the page loading, that will work, but not always.

Good luck!

Where do you see the word "Comment" on your screen?   I use both Firefox and IE, and both say Reply under the message.

Have you tried Firefox's Safe Mode? How you get there depends on the version of Windows (or Linux or Mac) that you're using. It's normally shown in your Start menu next to the standard Firefox shortcut.

Perhaps "or not." <G>

But I've been off-line a bit lately and don't frequent the same forums wakeupamerika does, so that's just a guess, I guess, on my part.

This is the third time for me to get a message to post to you.  It did not send. I Xd out (note there is no apostrophe- it still goes to Find) I am not able to use the arrow keys to advance the cursor either.

I highlighted my last message and clicked Copy. BUT, I am not able to Paste what I highlighted. There is no Paste option. I forgot to mention these past few weeks, this has been a regular problem.

I have updated my Firefox today. Last week, I had the current version. <shrug>

I have Windows XP Home Edition. I am not able to locate the Firefox Safe Mode.

I have been able to post a message every now and then. But not able to, more so.

This is very frustrating.

For the most part, my messages do not send. Each day, I try to post to past messages, to no avail.

wakeupamerika:

For some reason, Firefox thinks the cursor is falling outside the message-composition window, and that's why you're getting the QuickSearch feature when you press the apostrophe. In my experience, that happens when I'm typing away and tap my laptop's touchpad. I can't explain your experience.

You'll find Firefox's Safe Mode if you click on Start, All Programs (or just Programs), Mozilla Firefox, and it will be there, normally the second of two entries. If you still can't find it, click Start, Run, type (or copy and paste) firefox.exe -safe-mode and then press Enter.

Verify too that you're running the latest release of Firefox. Click Help, About Mozilla Firefox. Right under the red Firefox text, you should see you have Version 3.5.4. If you're using a 3.0.x version, try upgrading to the latest. http://www.mozilla.com/

If you're using a 2.x, or 1.x (or even earlier) version, that would definitely explain your problem. I vaguely recall a bug like this in an old version of Firefox, now that I think about it. You could solve it, as I recall, by, for instance, clicking on someone's name above a post, clicking in the message-composition pane that appears, then clicking back to the message you're composing in the main window. But if you're using a 1.x or 2.x version, it's really time to move up.

Sometimes when my trackball needs cleaning, it starts *wandering* a bit, even if I'm not touching it.  But even when that happens, it doesn't cause his problems.

I was just watching, and my arrow cursor is currently sitting (motionless however) up near the name Practice Forum, but it isn't affecting my typing, or formatting options.   There is also the blinking cursor, of course, where I'm typing.

I use a trackball, and it will occasionally wander too. Kinda fun to let happen. But it's not clicking anywhere for me, so the insertion point never leaves the window against my will.
