Hello everyone. Just about any residents in this great US of A has a bank account, whether Checking, or Savings, or both, at least. To be able to bank online, you must open an account with an I.D. or User Name and a Password or P.I.N. The banks' sites are what they call "encryption" or something like that. When I tried to log on with my User Name and Password, I couldn't access my bank account because I receive an "error" message that the Security Certificate at my bank expired so I was instructed to install the security certificate using the "Certificate Import Wizard" (you know what the Internet "Wizard" is)and now whenever I attempt to log on to my bank's web site with my long-standing User Name (over 5 years)I get an error message that 'Your user name is invalid' so I phoned my bank's customer service but they simply could'n resolve the issue over the phone so now I will have to go to my branch bank, and there I probably have to think of changing my user name and password. Hope I can resolve this issue there.Wish me luck !!!!Larry T

Sometimes I think the security protection of websites is a big pain, but when I think of getting my money and/or investments wiped out, I'm glad they have these protections.  When I've had trouble logging in, my bank calls my phone number and gives me a new temporary password.

Let us know how it works out when you go to the bank.

>>> an "error" message that the Security Certificate at my bank expired <<<
Any time that happens to me, my browser gives me the option to log-on anyway, which I will do for a long-known site like my bank.  Or sometimes I'll just wait a day, because it's a glitch on their end that is almost always resolved quickly.  I've never actually 'installed' a certificate.

I have never been asked to install said certificate since I began online banking 5-6 years ago. Anyway, I installed it per instruction and my I.D.is now "invalid". Hope to clear this up when I visit the bank.

As far as any glitch is concerned, I still get the error message.

Thinking someone might have attempted to hack onto my account, I did a Balance Inquiry at the bank's ATM using my debit card but everything is intact. You see, when I telephone  my bank's customer service they asked me if I tried to log on using more than one computer, I said I have only one computer at home but they said according to their database, about two other computers tried to access my account, making me think some hacker tried to invade my account. Today is Sunday so I'll be checking my account balance at the ATM once more before heading to the bank tomorrow. Larry.

I wish my bank did the same about giving me a temporary password so I can access my account. I know how that works. The Veterans Administration web site do the same procedure.

They will give me , say , for example, "5apple6" to use to log on. Once I log on, I will make my own password to use for any future log ons so that I will be the only one to know the password, which rightly, should be so. Right Nancy?

I'll be letting you know how it turn out tomorrow.Shouldn't be any problem making a new user name and password.Larry

I thought it was the website (bank in this case) that installed certificates.

---------------------------------------------------

Well, here's what happened, Nancy. I related all my online banking problem to a bank rep (worker) and after the discussions, they suggested that I change my User Name and password, which I did, and was able to access my account without problem.

Oh, and Patricia, regarding the "Security Certificate", that was cleared up with help from the bank's Electronic Banking Department. They say it sounds like the date on my computer is on a previous date and I need to change the date to either the current date or a later date and my security certificate will be updated. This should resolve the problem with most Internet users and changing the date should remedy the problem. To reset the date on my laptop I double-clicked on the time and do you know what? It said "January 02 2010" !!! . Reseting it to November 02 2009 knocked down the"gate" to my e-Banking account. Finis. Larry

I have never heard of a "Certificate Import Wizard".  I hope you weren't scammed.  You should have never followed those instructions.  You should have called your bank immediately at the phone number you are familiar with and handled it that way.  I recently received a call purported to be from my credit card issuer's fraud department wanting to check on some transactions.  I hung up on the call.  Then I called back using the phone number on my credit card.  As it turns out the call was legitimate.  I suggested to the fraud department that they ought to figure out some other way to contact me since I couldn't verify the source of a phone call.

You never heard of "Wizard" (of any kind?)
The Wizard is always on the Internet whenever someone wants to install *something*. Ask anybody on the web. Larry T.

As others here have said, we've never heard of a Certificate Installation Wizard.  I too was wondering if it wasn't some sort of Trojan Horse, or virus.  Have you run scanning software to check your computer?

Please put this matter to rest, Patricia.
Everything is back to normal. It had nothing to do with viruses,Trojan Horse, or what have you.It was just a glitch with my notebook computer. Larry
