If this is the first time you've arrived in the new forum software, you're probably in guest view.

Things to do:
  1.  Click on this link to get to the MY STUFF page. This will prompt you to login. Once logged in, the forum will recognize you. (You don't really have to complete posting the message.) Use your existing userid and password and you'll be correctly linked to your old messages.
  2. Bookmark MY STUFFand use it as your jumping off point to enter the forums.  This assures you arrive at a forum fully identified via your login.
  3. In My Stuff, set your name so we know who you are. ("You are number 6. I am number 2.")
  4. If you have a signature to set, do it there, too.
  5. Want a cute picture? Set up an avatar. There are some choices or you can upload your own. Pick an image 150x300 or 75x150.
  6. If you're using a browser and not a CompuServe client (CS4, CS2000, CS7), be sure to accept cookies from "compuserve.com", "netscape.com" (depending on whether you're a CompuServe or Netscape member), "aol.com", and "prospero.com".  If you do not accept the cookies, you'll have to login each time you come into the forums.
  7. Overwhelmed by the 6000+ messages already here?  On the messages screen, use the dropdown to select the more recent ones. Use the Find Messages box to the right search for messages by keyword(s).  To get completely caught up, look for the mark read button at the bottom right of the list of unread messages.
Welcome to the new forum community. Same folks, diffent software.

Above all, play around a bit and give your time to get used to things. For good tips on using the new software, visit the practice forum.

It seems the way to get around that is that once having got yourself logged in, then go to "My Stuff" and add it to your favorites or whatever your browser calls it. Once done, then every time you start a new session by clicking on that favorite you will be taken to the forum's My Stuff page and that automatically logs you in.

Bookmarking My Stuff is a great suggestion.  Once there, look at the list of recent forums. You can promote them into "favorite forums" so the links are always handy. The "recent forum" list currently tracks only the 10 most recent non-favorite forums.

I selected a picture from the choices but all I get is a picture space with a red X in the upper left corner on the My Stuff page.  Do you know what causes that?  I can see your picture ok in your messages.  Are you getting a picture in my message?

Thanks

Dave

I see a roller coaster in your messages

Tip:  Do not change the text size in the message editor.  If the default seems too small, increase your reading size at the bottom of the discussion display.

I love roller coasters!!!

I thought I would try out some of the new features and see how they work. Don't worry, I will return to the normal routine I have used here over the last couple of years as soon as I have checked everything out.

Steven,

Been busy getting daughter moved into appt. at college over the weekend and just found that new forum is "live".  However, when I got here as a result of transfer from OLD forum link, I was listed as "Guest" and there was NO "My Stuff" option available.  May need to re-think these instructions.  :-)

I only got logged in by using a link from previous access.

Once you've logged in, bookmark My Stuff and make it your starting point. A login button is in the works.

Dave, if you have image place-holders enabled in IE or other browser and your particular machine can't for somer reason reach the machine hosting your image, you'll just see the place holder.  I don't see it at all here, not even placeholder but that's my majick not your fault {grin}.

I have searched high and low but cannot see how to promote recently visited Forums to the echelons of being "Favourite Forums" in My Stuff, other than by creating links in Internet Explorer. Perhaps it is me trying to see something more complicated which is really quite simple.

Click on the tick <g>

Mark as a Favorite Forum Staff Test Forum Aug-23 40 new

Maybe double click on the [tick] before the Recent Forum name and that creates and moves it up to My Favorite Forums.

Remove from My Forums Virus Central Support 10:53 AM 0 new

Double click on the [x] on a Favorite and it disappears until you visit again and it becomes a Recent.

Oh well -- I didn't click on Steve's image ......

Just one click on the tick will do the trick Hugh <g>

And as you say a click on the X in the My Favourite Forums will delete an entry, unless you visit it again and it once more becomes Recent.

Here's a tip for saving a link to a message.

You'll notice that the heading of each message includes a number like "1234546.7" and that the number is a link. Drag that link from the message onto your Windows or Mac desktop and you'll create a shortcut to the message.  If you create a desktop folder called "forum links" or something like that, you can use it to create a bunch of links into "saved" messages.

An alternative is to drag the icon next to the URL at the top of the browser to the desktop.

(This is not my tip -- thanks go to the folks in one of the back rooms for pointing it out.)

<< If you create a desktop folder called "forum links" or something like that, you can use it to create a bunch of links into "saved" messages >>

The only problem I have with that is that the system names the shorcut with the message number which is meaningless in terms of finding it again and does not tell you even what Forum it comes from which you need to know if you want to search for it.

When for example you make a shortcut to a MSKB article it names it with the title of the article.

Unless someone knows something I don't <g>

Dragging the icon next to the full URL names the file with the page title. Right now the title is the forum name.  It's not a perfect system. {grin}

Thanks for the information.

Sadly, the new UI is terrible, plain terrible. The software people at Compuserve should be ashamed of themselves. Cluttered page, tiny type, .....

There is a PRINT DISCUSSION command which opens a printable page,
useful for viewing even if you don't want to print since normal view is so
tiny (bad UI again!). I can print it to a PDF file using my Acrobat 405 but
it won't SaveAs .mht which is a major drawback for many people - it has the potention of helping view batches of messages offline though immediate draft of reply won't be possible, but is not implemented correctly.

Of course the funamental problem of any graphical interface remains - lack of speed. That has long been known.

....Keith
