Judge Moves to Protect Grizzlies

United States District Judge Donald Molloy has ordered that Yellowstone National Park's grizzly bears be protected -- reversing a Fish & Wildlife Service decision made during the Bush administration.  The judge's ruling will extend protection of the bears.  What do you think of his decision?

Two years ago, Fish & Wildlife determined that grizzlies were no longer endangered.  Such a determination was necessary in order to permit hunting of the creatures, a move which was challenged by some environmental groups.

This week's decision may protect grizzlies from being shot by hunters for a while longer.

And Judge Molloy is set to hear another challenge by environmental groups against three logging companies whose projects would threaten the bears' habitat, according to the environmentalists.

According to the Associated Press, that "suit alleges that 14 miles of proposed new logging roads could ultimately wipe out the 30 to 40 grizzlies in the forest's Cabinet-Yaak area."

Have you ever wondered what grizzlies eat?  Wildlife fan Nate tells me that grizzlies eat ground squirrels like people eat popcorn -- about a hundred of them a day!

I wonder if they like them buttered or salted? <smile>

What do you think of the court's decision protecting the great bears?

From the Christian Science Monitor this week:

Justin Lessman/The Powell Tribune/AP/File

A grizzly bear sits on a ridge overlooking a frozen Sedge Bay in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Park grizzlies depend on white bark pine nuts as a food source, but much of the white bark pines have been killed by beetles in an infestation related to climate change....
