People who are having difficulty stretching their budget to meet increasing food prices might want to look into a program provided by a non-denominational organization called Angel Food Ministries.

The organization purchases what it calls "restaurant grade,"  name-brand food from wholesalers and provides boxes of the food to anyone who has signed up to purchase it and pick it up.   There are no income requirements or other eligibility standards to participate in the program, which now helps to feed about 500,000 families in 35 states.

The organization states that the regular box of food provides about $65 worth of food for a cost of $30 and each box might typically feed a family of 4 for a week or a senior individual for a month. People who purchase a regular box of food can also purchase additional "special" boxes of beef, meats and chicken for about $20 or less.

For more information, including exactly what is in each box this month -- and where the nearest distribution center might be for you to pick up a box, see the organization's website at: http://www.angelfoodministries.com/

I've never used the program and can't say more about it, but if anyone does know more about the program or uses it, please be sure to post a note and tell us about it.

       - Paula

I participate in a similar program called SERVE New England, in which the "Family Meal Bundle" is priced at $25 (after a recent increase) -- but there is a "twist".  In addition to the cash price (including credit/debit cards if ordering on line), paid in advance when you order, for each bundle or special, one does two hours of volunteer service [liberally defined as almost any uncompensated service performed for a person or organization outside of your immediate family]. One gets the beneficiary of the service to "sign off" on a Volunteer Service Receipt, and then turns in that receipt when picking up one's order. Distribution is once a month on a Saturday morning.

BTW, in this program, one is not required to buy a qualifying standard Family Meal Bundle in order to buy one or more "specials."

The only drawback, from my POV, is that the quantities are scaled for a family of four, while I have a bachelor household. The more perishible of the produce items [things like peaches, plums, bananas, or, worst of all, fresh spinach] seem to "go" faster than I eat them -- even if I try to practice short term produce gluttony to use them before I lose them.

Best regards,  4merCL

Dear Friend,

It's interesting that the program you mentioned has incorporated another way to do good things for people -- what a nice idea!

I participate in an organic farm co-op and sometimes have difficulty finding ways to use up all the produce in my share before it spoils, too.  The box this week had lots of strawberries in it and I'm looking forward to the challenge of not letting a single berry go to waste! (g)

I have two freezers.. One full size upright (Currently turned off)

One compact chest (Turned on)  Note the compact chest job draws a great grand 36 watts when running  (Most draw 100 to 1000)

You could take the ones you can't use now and spread them out on a cookie sheet and freeze them.  Then bag them up and use only as many as you want each time you take them out of the freezer.  They'll work nicely for anything except original fresh berries.

And what are "original fresh berries" that can't be frozen?

Oh, sorry.  I worded that badly.  I meant that the thawed berries would work fine for any use except one that required original fresh berries.  The frozen and thawed ones no longer have the texture of never-frozen fresh berries.
