>> The organization states that the regular box of food provides about $65 worth of food for a cost of $30 and each box might typically feed a family of 4 for a week or a senior individual for a month. People who purchase a regular box of food can also purchase additional "special" boxes of beef, meats and chicken for about $20 or less. <<
I participate in a similar program called SERVE New England, in which the "Family Meal Bundle" is priced at $25 (after a recent increase) -- but there is a "twist". In addition to the cash price (including credit/debit cards if ordering on line), paid in advance when you order, for each bundle or special, one does two hours of volunteer service [liberally defined as almost any uncompensated service performed for a person or organization outside of your immediate family]. One gets the beneficiary of the service to "sign off" on a Volunteer Service Receipt, and then turns in that receipt when picking up one's order. Distribution is once a month on a Saturday morning.
BTW, in this program, one is not required to buy a qualifying standard Family Meal Bundle in order to buy one or more "specials."
The only drawback, from my POV, is that the quantities are scaled for a family of four, while I have a bachelor household. The more perishible of the produce items [things like peaches, plums, bananas, or, worst of all, fresh spinach] seem to "go" faster than I eat them -- even if I try to practice short term produce gluttony to use them before I lose them.
