Daryl, a chance to enjoy some fall foliage right in our own backyard under perfect weather conditions like yesterday--okay we also went out for a ride to get some more of the foliage! [g]  It was truly a magnificent fall day!  Regards, Len

Your garden looks lovely, Len. Congratulate Sue for me. <g>

Where were the boats? It looks like the body of water is large enough to be Spruce Run. Is it?

Interesting.  I thought of Spruce Run as well.

Lovely pictures of your garden, Len.  It's a nice time of year to see the colors.  I was a bit amazed at the march of the colors as we went to Longwood yesterday and the intensity of the colors increased as we went north.  We are just starting to get some nice colors here but further north it was in full glory.

Linda, we're wondering when peak will hit Valley Forge--it was voted one of the 10 best spots in the country to view fall foliage--we'd like to combine that with Conowingo  if schedule and weather permits.  We'd spend night overnight somewhere between the two spots--maybe Newark Delaware or Wilmington.  How is Havre de Grace as a town?  Regards, Len

Does she paint things like your yard with all the colors, landscapes?
I have a friend who can do beautiful watercolors in fine detail. She makes wonderful bookmarks, handpainted.
They are then sealed. She paints all kinds of scenes and things.

Stunning pictures each and every one Len. The fall colour and the water pictures were just drop dead gorgeous.

I didn't take any pictures here this year (too busy on other stuff) and with gales forecast, its too late now. But here to with the good spring, and dry sunny autumn, the colours have been magnifiscent. I can never decide which I like best - the acid green of spring leaf burst, or the deep rich golds and reds of autumn.

Fran, yes, Sue and I have the same discussion.  Well already the leaves are starting to drop real heavy and it won't be long before they're all bare--not good for a gardener.  Regards, Len [sigh]

Why not good for a gardener? I find autumn and early winter a smashing time. A chance to clear, tidy and plant - that I don't have any other time of the year.

The only downside, collecting the leaves from places I don't want them and bagging them up to form leaf mold in sspring.

Fran well aesthetically I prefer the leaves to be on my deciduous trees and shrubs--still there are chores that do have to get done and the winter will definitely drive me into the house alot more for that and indoor couch potatoing.  Regards, Len

I know the feeling about indoor chores - in winter I run out of excuses, once that is the garden is bedded down for the winter - which will take me a few weeks yet - or more if I can spin it out <gg>.

However leaves remaining on deciduous trees - no. Aesthetically I find mid summer the least aesthetically pleasing for deciduous shrubs/trees. In winter the beauty of branch and twig unclothed, occassionally rimmed by snow or hoar frost - can be breathtaking.

Fran yesterday we knocked off a big one in our garden--cutting back all the pond plants and lowering them to their lower  positions for the upcoming winter--those darn irises were really heavy--did they ever expand!  Regards, Len [g]

They are obviously happy - but I can imagine the weight. That reminds me I really need to split my iris siberica they tooo like your pond iris's have expanded somewhat. Can't think where to put the splits - ah now there's a thought, if I take the splits and put them in pots, could sell them at the open garden next year. All more funds for the village hall etc.

That reminds me, now that we've had some rain, I could plant my primular vulgaris tots - and a few other bits. That plus winterising the garden and of course my Townlands Project http://aspleyguise.bedsparishes.gov.uk/news/townlands-exhibition , should keep me busy til at least xms - household chores can wait.
