[Msg # 129691.1 ]
I want to upgrade my video card, but don't know how new I can go in the nVidia line and still get Linux support.
Anyone know if any of these will work
? I've looked for some of these cards on various hardware compatibility lists, but not all of them specify whether they tried the proprietary nVidia drivers or not.
I tried Google, but get 'false hits' where the card is on a page that has an ad for somethingorother 'Linux' as well. The CARD itself is not listed as working with Linux, but the word "Linux" is on the same page as the card. I went through MANY of those before giving up.
I also find that the same chipset will be on a variety of different cards made by other manufacturers. Is the video chipset the only determining factor, or will an nVidia 9800 GT card work while a BFG 9800 GT will not?
Thanks for any light anyone can shed on this.
Frank.

Nvidia is always up to date with the linux driver.

the site tell you which cards are supported and you will see that even the newwer ones are there. When I got mine I believe it was on the market for less than a month and it worked perfect.
The most demanding part of the cards (with the exceptions of games) I believe are the 3D desktops. You can place a message on the forums and often you get responses from users that have the video adapter you are looking for.

I have a nvidia. I do not know other manufactures using the same chipset. They should work as well.

Frank,
FWIW, I have been using an XFX GeForce 6800 card for 2 or 3 years (a bit long in the tooth now).
Xandros 4.0 and Ubuntu have both worked well with it.

Good to know. I
thought
this was the case, but I wanted to know before I shell out over $100 for a card.

I'll probably look around for an nVidia outlet here in town. The one I linked to carries a lot of nVidia-
based
units, but very few genuine nVidia cards. I'd rather stick with what I know.
Thanks again.
Frank.

I have an nVidia 7300 GT in my testbed machine downstairs, and even though THAT card is getting on, it worked well from day 1 when I bought it a couple of years ago.
I've been happy with nVidia and their support for Linux. I know that the purists don't like proprietary drivers, but those drivers work much better than the reverse-engineered ones, and I'm happy to see a commercial company supporting Linux actively, proprietary or not.
