Has Nancy Pelosi crafted a national health reform bill that will make the cut?

The Associated Press describes the bill in some detail:

The bill would require nearly everyone by 2013 to sign up through their employer, a government program or a new kind of purchasing pool called an exchange. Tax credits would be available for most of those buying coverage through the exchange. They would have the option of picking a new government plan or private insurance.

During the transition years from 2010-2013, a temporary government program would help people turned down by private insurers because of medical problems, lawmakers said. After that, insurers no longer could refuse to provide coverage to the sick, nor could they charge more because of poor health of the insured.

Pelosi hopes to usher the bill through a House vote by Veterans Day, November 11th.

But there are many obstacles to overcome.  No Republicans are expected to support the bill.  Additionally, there are large differences in the House bill and  the legislation under consideration in the Senate:

Do you think Pelosi can get the bill passed by Veterans Day?

Will the Senate sign off on similar legislation?

President Obama would like to see a bill on his desk before year's end.  Do you think he'll get it?

What is your opinion on the bill?

This is nothing but a big laugh.  It's a present thrown to the saps in San Francisco.  Pelosi knows she can't get this through the house.  The senate will laugh it right off the floor.

Well, tell me this: what do you think Pelosi and Reid need to do in order to get a bill to Obama's desk by the end of the year?  Is it doable, or a lost cause?

After some consideration, I've decided that I support the idea of mandatory insurance, although I'm unclear how it would be enforced.   Even seemingly healthy people can end up in accidents, or with unexpected medical issues.

After some consideration, I've decided that I support the idea of mandatory insurance, although I'm unclear how it would be enforced.

One of the arguments is that people who don't buy insurance would be fined. So far, the fines discussed are less than the price of insurance. That leaves open a situation in which people don't buy insurance and pay the lower cost fine. Then, if they get sick, they'd sign up for insurance since they can't be turned down based on pre-existing conditions. When they get well, they drop the insurance.

Even seemingly healthy people can end up in accidents, or with unexpected medical issues.

A lot of the accidents could be covered by homeowners or automobile insurance.

I honestly don't know, Alex.  It seems to me that there are too many firmly entrenched, divided factions pulling in directions that will make any health care reform bill they can really get passed virtually toothless.

One good thing I think they could accomplish by the end of the year if they put their mind to it is to pass a bill that prevents insurance companies from refusing coverage of existing conditions.  That's something we really need as a nation.

I'm afraid there is a lot of scary stuff in this bill that no one knows about and will hurt a lot of people. Pelosi is one scary woman with a lot of power. Congress has no vested interest in this health bill. They should all be forced to participate as well and the plans they have should all be eliminated.

Participate in *what* exactly?  It appears that there may be a requirement that everyone have health insurance of some sort, in the final bill -- but Congress meets that requirement.

Madame Pelosi has released the new, improved, House Democrat Health Care plan. We know it's improved because it's gone from 1,700 pages that no one had read to 1,990 pages that no one will read, containing the word "shall" 3,425 times.

One Democrat Congressman (can't remember his name) says he has 40 other Dems who will vote against it because it doesn't prevent government money from being used for abortions.

Sounds like Madame has trouble on her hands even before any debate gets started.

What do you think about the provisions of the new bill?

What do you think its chances are?

I agree with Mar531 that Congress should have the choice ONLY among the choices available to everyone else. Conversely, open the Federal Employees program (which is made up only of private companies, btw) to everyone.

I don't really understand why anyone would refer to her as madam.   No more than trash that got tossed in the bag to me.    Why don't we support our troups.   They are the ones that need health care now and no one including Hussian or so called, whatever Obama even cares about.   Seems he is trying to assist the radical groups in killing all the American soldiers he can get killed before he even gives thought to their care.   God bless all those who vote for it.  Sooner or later they will need it.   My vote will go to those who oppose.  Thanks

I come from the point of view of a son whose mother has pre-existing conditions.  The insurance companies refuse to cover pre-existing conditions or the afflicted person entirely because of a cost-inhibitive downward spiral.  Based on referenced averages, the smaller percentage who have pre-existing conditions will cost much more to cover than the larger number of insured who rarely use their coverage but still pay in.  If you have mostly healthy people the funds flowing in can be higher than funds flowing out.  Still averaging only a meager  2.2% profit margin as per Forbes.  Like 30th place or so down the list of industries.  But when that ratio is swayed because healthier people lose their coverage due to job loss or personal budget cutting, and more of the previously uncovered patients sign on, the balance, for lack of a better word, suffers.  Sort of like the Social Security/Baby Boomer outnumbering scenario to come. This is not as bad, I know .  I'm not sure what the ratio is but when that 2.2 % goes away business stops.  Most of the "profits " health insurance companies take in are required to be  earmarked to pay claims. The only way to keep the ratio correct is charge an "arm and a leg"  for premiums to those who have the pre-existing conditions. Not good. Otherwise all of those who do not need insurance will leave the rising prices and those who need insurance regularly are the majority. No profitability there. Government only after that.  Check-mate. There is some middle ground to cover before we take this route.

On the contrary, mustanggirl6669, President Obama has done something President Bush never did in honoring our troops.  He traveled to Dover Air Force Base to honor our fallen war heroes as they were returned home in flag-draped caskets.

You can read about it HERE.
