FAA HAS "Suggestion" on enforcement of stuff in seat-back pockets.  Seems someone there has acheived a modicum of common sense....

If small, lightweight items, such as eyeglasses or a cell phone, can be placed in the seat pocket without exceeding the total designed weight limitation of the seat pocket or so that the seat pocket does not block anyone from evacuating the row of seats, it may be safe to do so.

Wonderful way to lose them ... to say nothing about the hygene aspects that have been raised ...

Not too sure about the "common sense" ....

I think it is common sense to the extent that some airlines were apparently over-reacting and keeping everything out of there at all times and some were apparently totally ignoring the rule.  It is common sense that after takeoff and before landing you should be able to temporarily put lightweight stuff in the seat pocket.

What other stuff? At least on AA, there isn't much in there any more, just the inflight rag and maybe a Skymall.

I felt very fortunate last month on a flight from L.A. to Chicago.  My cell was clipped to the left side of my belt and I was in a left-side window seat.  Felt for the phone after landing and it was....GONE.  The leather case was empty.  Had quite a sinking feeling after feeling around the seat area and floor and coming up empty.  Then when we got to the gate I reached for my carry-on under the seat in front of me and there was the phone.  Apparently it fell to the floor at some point, and during the deceleration during landing it slid forward and was stopped by my carry on.  Relief.

No maybe about Skymall catalog, the House magazine and one other thickish something from what I remember -- I remember I couldn't slip my paperback part way in while doing something else ...

Lucky break about the phone -- wonder if it would have occured to me, you anyone to borrow someone's and call your own number? <g>

That is usually my first recourse when I "misplace" my phone, but of course....the phone was OFF in accordance with the rules  <G>.

"it may be safe to do so"

I think there's a big difference between "it may be safe to do so" and "it is permitted".  Many things which "may be safe" are still prohibited by regulation or law.

Ah, true.  And of course just because something is "legal" doesn't mean it is "safe" either.
